Procedure for getting a project car legal...
Ok, here's the scenario...
Lets say I want to buy a car that needs a bit of work, and lets presume it has been sitting about for a while and has no license or safety test stuff. I take it I would need to buy or hire a trailer transporter to pick it up, then, once I have repaired it, I would need to trailer it to the nearest test centre? Are these centres quite common? In the UK we have "MOT" stations, which are usually attached to garages and they are all over the place. The cost is around £50 for a test, although usually costs a lot more than that when it fails ![]() While I'm on the subject of trailers... If I was to buy a car which turned out to be a dog, can I strip the car, then put the rusty heap on the trailer and take it to a scrapper? We get paid about £190 per tonne for scrap over here. Can I do all this from my house, or would I need to have business premises to be allowed to work on a couple of cars? I'm still considering bringing over all my car parts, as they took me 15 years to collect and I'll be buggered if I'm going to just give them all away for buttons ![]() |

Not exactly sure about the procedures about bringing a car over, but cars here if they have been "branded" or writen off from an accident, to be able to resafety them the work needs to be carefully documented, paperwork, video, etc etc you can bring the car you need to work on and they get a safety for it from almost any garage, most of them will safety a car and few will do the emission test but like i said talk to me before you get to that step, and you can get a car, grab parts off it then scrap it yes, all of this can be done in your driveway/garage but in order to safety the car a garage will look at it, but if its been writen off or has been "branded" as unsafe to drive then unless your going to scrap that car its not worth it, and yes a trailer would be a good idea to transport the car to the garage

Ok, that's good.
But now I need to find a house that I can keep a trailer at without messing up the neighbourhood, lol. What about "Traders Insurance"? My Car insurance policy allows me and my wife, to drive any car, up to a certain value, fully comprehensively. If I buy a new car I just contact my insurance company and update the records, no extra charge. I took this policy out about 8 years ago when I was fitting motoring accessories to cars and I needed to be able to drive customer's cars. |
