Brakes squeak after changing rotors and pads
Hey everyone. Nice site here.
I'm not a car person so i need some advise. i took my car for oil change and got my parts inspected for free. the guy at the garage said my breaks needed replacement. So i took his word for it and got the front ones rotors and pads changed on both sides. He serviced my back doll? brake for free. Now my breaks squeal whenever i hit the pedal. i took it back to him and i can swear it doesnt squeal when he takes it out for a test drive. i drove the car with him and they STOP squealing. this has been going on for weeks and i have taken the car back three time and getting frustrated. i think he ripped me because i dont know about cars and rely on professionals to take care of things. Honestly my breaks were fine as far as i could feel before the repair and now it's gone bad. i feel like reporting the guy but what if i'm doing something wrong? any help you guys can give me would be great. __________________ Angelica Rumaro Angelica's photography blog on Facebook |

It's bad to hear when you go to a professional mechanic just to leave with more problems than you went for. Although, it may or may not be a rip off.
From what you're explaining, it may be the case of cold rotor vs warmed up ones. So my two questions; does it happen more often and louder in the morning when you drive the car after long break? What car do you have? __________________ ![]() |

Thanks very much for the response so quickly. i have interprid made by chrysler. it's an old car i think its 2000 or 2002 but it drives well. To answer your questions i don't know if it only squeaks in the morning. i did not pay that much attention but the garage is about 5 minutes drive from where i start.

When new rotors and pads are put on it is kinda common for some unknown sounds to arise - but squeaking shouldn't happen ALL the time unless you have some high performance metallic pads. Another reason brakes would squeak is if someone did a "sudden stop" after that have been installed. This would cause the resins that hold the pad together to form at the top of the pad - causing the sound.
Hope that helps ![]() __________________ If life is a highway, mine is missing some signs. |

Thanks guys for all the effort for my issue. It turns out that it's only happening for firs few minutes and then it stops. Explains why my mechanic wasn't able to find the same problem. Now I have breaks that are squeaking sometimes but before they weren't squeaking at all. My mechanic said he can't do anything about it.
I don't think I had sudden stop after getting me breaks changed so what ahold I do now? I paid him 300 bucks to make my car squeak ![]() __________________ Angelica Rumaro Angelica's photography blog on Facebook |

Getting rid of an annoying brake squeak and other brake noise is like trying to cure a bad case of herpes. You can treat the symptoms and improve the patient's condition. But it is virtually impossible to eliminate the underlying cause. Fortunately, brake noise is not caused by a virus. It is caused by a combination of factors that sometimes add up to create noise.
The same approach can be used on the calipers. Cleaning and lubricating the caliper mounts can also help dampen vibrations to quiet the brakes. Vibrations here can be caused by worn or loose mounts or mounting hardware. If the calipers are badly rusted or worn, they may have to be replaced. But in most instances, you can probably clean them up, lubricate the mounting points and return them to service. You may have to replace the caliper slides, pins, clips and bushings, though, if there is too much play or looseness between the caliper and knuckle. Be sure to use a high temperature brake grease so the grease stays where it belongs. It may be necessary to resurface the rotors to cure a noise problem. To brake quietly, the rotors have to be in good condition, relatively smooth and flat. So if the rotors are rough, glazed or have not been finished properly, they'll have to be resurfaced. So talk to your mechanic and get him to lubricate the braking system "again", if he insists that he's done it already. That is my first bet. If that fails there are other ways too but you will have to spend more money for it. Grease as I mentioned above could also work, you can either do it yourself or get your mechanic to do it. |
